The customer was originally interested in just a couple of 16″ industrial-strength “STOP” floor signs. He told me that the employees there get compensated when they find new ways to increase safety. As he and I walked around his facility, he showed me pallet racking that had been damaged and areas where the floor plan had changed, and the lines that organize the facility had faded or were no longer in the right areas. He also told me that the last install crew he hired to install some racking actually stole items from the facility. Understanding his concerns better, I was able to put together a package of products that addressed those concerns. I was also able to recommend an install crew that was so good that the customer called me when they left just to thank me for helping him out and asking how far my crew would travel.

How do you stay engaged with trends that you see in your industry?

LinkedIn, networking, and targeted research.

If you had to start over from scratch, what’s the first thing you’d do differently?

I would have used my personality, work ethic, and product knowledge to do what I am doing today. Doing the research to connect reputable companies with quality products. If I had done this earlier in my career, I can only imagine the professional relationships and friendships that I would have today.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received as a business owner?

Judge slowly. Give time to seek advice and criticism.

What makes a successful partnership at your company?

Honesty, responsiveness, and being an expert in your area of work.

What makes Columbus such a great place to do business?

I grew up in central Ohio and graduated from THE OSU. Although I have lived in other states, Columbus is my home. Columbus is where I came home to. Seeing the economic boom that this industry is having in this area AND being in a position where I can serve fellow Buckeyes is what I love doing.

What do you want people to remember about your business five years from now?

Everything started from the acronym KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid). Listen to the issues that my customers have and become a knowledgeable resource to help them fix them. Over the years of walking around warehouses, I noticed areas when pallett racking was damaged and could lead to a big problem if not addressed. I also realized how the layouts of the facilities constantly changed. So my first products were racking materials, racking repair kits & Industrial-strength floor tape, and signs. In 5 years, it will be interesting to see what other products I carry because the right customers needed it.
