Now Is the Time to Strengthen Ohio’s Innovation Economy

June 18th, 2025

By Derrick R. Clay, President and CEO, Columbus Chamber of Commerce

Ohio is on a roll. Thanks to bold leadership and strategic investment, our state has become a national model for innovation, job creation, and inclusive economic growth. From advanced manufacturing to artificial intelligence, Ohio is proving that with the right environment, business and community success go hand in hand.

A key driver of this momentum is the expanding presence of data centers – essential infrastructure powering everything from cloud computing and logistics to next-generation technology. These facilities are steadily transforming our economy and reinforcing the fact that Ohio isn’t just participating in the innovation economy – we’re leading it.

That’s why we must continue to foster a strong, supportive policy environment for data centers, just as we do for manufacturing, warehousing, and agriculture. These industries work in tandem to build a stronger, more resilient Ohio.

Data centers bring high-value investment, generate significant tax revenue, and serve as powerful engines of job creation. Across Ohio, they contribute millions to support local schools, first responders, infrastructure, and other essential services. They also spark growth in construction, metal fabrication, professional services, and beyond – creating a ripple effect that benefits businesses of all sizes.

Nowhere is this impact more visible than in the Columbus Region. As a growing national tech hub, our region is attracting global attention – and the surge in digital infrastructure is unlocking new possibilities for startups, established companies, and the workforce alike. From Licking County to Dayton, companies are scaling to meet demand, fueled in part by this digital backbone.

Thoughtful fiscal policy is key to sustaining this growth. As we look ahead, updates to Ohio’s tax environment should reflect our shared commitment to keeping the state competitive, attractive, and forward-looking. The business community stands ready to partner with policymakers to keep Ohio a premier destination for innovation and investment.

This is the time to build on our success. By championing data centers and the broader innovation ecosystem, we can secure Ohio’s position as a national leader in economic opportunity and technological advancement for generations to come.
