COLUMBUS, OH — Shumaker’s Columbus office continues its growth with the addition of associates Katherine “Kate” H. Crawford and Nicole L. Kalmbach, further strengthening the firm’s capabilities in health law and litigation.
Kate joins Shumaker as a member of the firm’s Health Law Service Line. She brings deep knowledge of the health care industry and advises clients on a broad range of regulatory and compliance matters, including state scope of practice laws and regulations; federal fraud, waste, and abuse analyses; and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) requirements.
Kate has represented a diverse array of health care clients, including advanced practice registered nurses, physician practices, trade associations, medical spas, and pharmacies. Her practice also includes counseling federally qualified health centers, child welfare providers, recovery home operators, and community behavioral health organizations. Regardless of the type of care her clients provide, Kate delivers practical, solutions-oriented counsel that helps organizations streamline operations while maintaining compliance with applicable laws and regulations, allowing them to focus on what matters most: caring for their patients.
Nicole joins Shumaker as a member of the firm’s Litigation & Disputes Service Line. Diligent and solutions-oriented, she assists business owners with a wide range of commercial disputes. Clients value her trial experience and responsiveness as she works to achieve swift and favorable outcomes.
Nicole brings significant experience in environmental disputes, including matters involving water pollution control laws and regulations. She previously served as an Assistant Attorney General in the Environmental Enforcement Section of the Ohio Attorney General’s Office. Prior to joining Shumaker, Nicole practiced at another Columbus-area law firm in Business Litigation, assisting commercial clients with their various needs. There she assisted in a three-week arbitration involving the construction of a power plant on a college campus and helped secure a highly favorable eight-figure award for the client.
“Kate and Nicole bring exceptional experience and strong, client-focused approaches to their practices,” said Mike O’Callaghan, Columbus Managing Partner at Shumaker. “Their additions reflect our ongoing strategic expansion in the Columbus market and commitment to meeting the evolving needs of clients across Ohio and beyond.”
The firm’s growth in Columbus has accelerated in 2026. In January, Shumaker strengthened its Columbus office with the addition of a multidisciplinary legal team that expanded the firm’s health law, commercial litigation, and construction litigation capabilities. That team included partners Daphne Kackloudis and David Scott, along with associate Jordan Burdick. Since January, the firm has also added three paralegals and two special projects assistants in the Columbus office.
