November 14th, 2024
When employees feel safe, seen and valued at work, they are more likely to be engaged and productive, creating healthier and more prosperous organizations. Being civil to one another goes beyond making others feel comfortable. Civility at work looks like creating a space where every person feels respected by their co-workers.
According to Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM):
- 161 million people work in the U.S. every day.
- 58% of U.S. workers believe our society is uncivil.
- U.S. workers collectively experience 190 million acts of incivility per day.
- U.S. organizations collectively lose about $2 billion per day in reduced productivity and absenteeism.
How can you promote civility in your workplace?
- Consider the potential impact of your words or actions before you approach a co-worker.
- Take responsibility for your behavior and acknowledge when you have made a mistake.
- Rely on facts and not assumptions about others or their work.
- Listen to understand without interrupting the speaker.
- Ask questions to assess and understand.
- Communicate critical feedback respectfully.
- Focus on finding the right answer, and not being right.
