Review: Our Experience with In-Home Personal Training by GYMGUYZ
February 10th, 2024
Disclosure: Two personal training and one stretch session were provided by the company GymGuyz North Columbus. As always, all opinions are our own.
In a world where time is a precious commodity, finding a fitness routine that works for your lifestyle can make all the difference. When we saw signs in the neighborhood reminding us of the in-home personal training service, we reached out to give it a try. We’ll explore the benefits, and our experience, with GYMGUYZ as well as how this service might fit you, your goals, and lifestyle.
Convenience at Your Doorstep
Pros: With GYMGUYZ, the gym comes to you. This means no more battling traffic, waiting for equipment, or rushing to fit your workout into a tight schedule. Suddenly, a 2-hour endeavor to drive to the gym, workout for an hour, and return home became just the 1-hour of working out*. Like packages from Amazon, we enjoyed the convenience of having a certified personal trainer arrive at our doorstep, ready with all the equipment needed to guide us through our sessions.
Potential Con: *Depending on the state of your home, and mindset, you may find yourself doing some cleaning before your actual workout session. Or maybe this was just us – it’s kind of like when you tidy up before professional home cleaners arrive so that they can really get to the deeper clean. We ran around for about 20 minutes vacuuming the space we anticipated working out and putting gift-wrapping items away. Silver lining: we got an extra 20 minutes of physical activity 😀
Customized Workouts for Maximum Results
Pros: One size doesn’t fit all. You hear us saying it with regards to personalized nutrition, and it’s also true when it comes to fitness. GYMGUYZ offers customized workouts designed to meet your individual goals, fitness level, and preferences. Where it all starts, though, is with the complimentary assessment. Our trainer asked about our personal health history and goals, evaluated our body composition and then moved into testing our level of physical fitness during our first appointment. During our second appointment, our trainer focused mainly on body-weight exercises and band exercises and, in what we consider one of the most valuable aspects of one-to-one training, he corrected our form. There is a definite difference between going to a class where the instructors shout out tips like “flex your feet” or “engage your core” and having an expert demonstrate and physically adjust your form as you do squats and push-ups correctly. Let me tell you, friends, there’s nothing like a piece of humble pie being served up after you tell your trainer “oh, I can probably do 30 of those in a row; I do it all the time” and then, after engaging the correct muscles, only being able to do a third.
Potential Con: Your ego may take a hit :D. Again, this isn’t really a disadvantage to the service, but an advantage because now we (and you) will know how to perform the exercise correctly AND reduce risk of injury. It’s a win-win!
Comfort and Privacy
Pros: For some, the thought of working out in a crowded gym can be intimidating. The worries about being judged for your body, not knowing how to use the weights, or how to put a routine together are abated by a certified personal trainer leading you through, in the privacy and comfort of your own home. This helps you focus on your fitness journey without any external distractions.
Potential Cons: This isn’t really a con; just remember that you may need to play a role in removing distractions as well – such as keeping your pets from circling your legs as you do squats, putting your work notifications on ‘pause’, or having the other parent on childcare duty – so you and your trainer can focus on your workout.
Increased Accountability and Motivation
Pros: It’s easy to hit snooze on a solo workout and skip the gym – after all, who will notice? In that case, probably no one; however, with in-home personal training and a scheduled time with your trainer, the excuses get peeled away. Your trainer not only brings expertise but also the motivation to keep you on track. The accountability factor enhances consistency, making it more likely that you’ll stick to your fitness routine and therefore get results!
Potential cons: none – we could all probably use more accountability and motivation, right?
Creative Variation for all Levels
Pros: Fitness and nutrition really do have so many areas of a Venn diagram that overlap such as the need for personalization, the mindset and motivation pieces, and creative variety in foods we eat as well as fitness routines. An elite athlete is going to need to be supported and challenged in a way that is different from someone who is just getting back into working out after a few years. An 80-year-old recovering from a stroke is going to have different exercises for the goal of walking again than a 13-year-old who wants specialized training around soccer. The result is similar to that of nutrition – if you match the goal and lifestyle of the person you serve with the proper food and physical activity, that person will get the desired results much easier and faster than an ‘off-the-shelf’ diet or exercise program.
Potential Cons: none, this is needed
Flexibility in Scheduling and Assisted Stretch Sessions
Pros: We all know that life can be a bit unpredictable, along with our schedules. Unlike classes that are only offered at certain times in the morning or evening, GYMGUYZ understands the importance of flexibility. Whether you love to knock out a workout session early in the morning or you find that early afternoons or later evenings work better for you, their trainers accommodate your busy schedule. Being able to schedule in the early afternoon made it easier for us to ‘fit in’ fitness. Speaking of flexibility, during our third session (which was a 90-minute combination of training and stretching), we were looking forward to finishing the workout with a 30-minute stretch session. For some reason, our mind substituted the word ‘massage’ for ‘stretch’ so we were looking forward to relaxing and maybe even taking a quick nap. Cue a movie villain’s evil laugh here because no – it’s definitely an assisted stretch and part of that assistance is to help your muscles elongate and become more flexible. While our arms and back were relatively relaxed as they were worked on, stretches involving the upper part of the leg and hips had my trainer reminding me to do some Lamaze-styled breathing. It was worth it as getting off that table had me feeling flexible like Gumby and the next day’s recovery seemed faster. Long story short, the stretch sessions can be great for improving flexibility and recovery, preventing injury, and promoting your overall well-being.
Potential cons: who doesn’t want flexible scheduling and the results of assisted stretching?
The in-home personal training provided by GYMGUYZ can be a game-changer for those seeking a convenient, personalized, and effective fitness experience. The pros are clear: convenience, customize workouts, creative variation, increased accountability, privacy and comfort, and flexibility training and scheduling. This service can help remove the barriers that have gotten between you and your fitness goals. Your journey to a healthier, stronger you can start right at your doorstep!
