Tell us about your company’s mission and values

MPW Industrial Services’ 50-year plus legacy is rooted in its core values—customer service, the drive to win, professionalism, the spirit of family, long-term commitment and continuous improvement. It’s also about family. There are roughly 150 instances of family members working together at MPW and its affiliates. Employees referring their family members to MPW is the greatest compliment we could ever have. This company has always been about instilling family values in our employees and operating MPW based on those values.

MPW has a lot of great people working for it who have competitive personalities and the drive and determination to succeed. As a family-owned and operated company, MPW’s employees are its extended family. Ensuring their safety isn’t just a priority—it’s a way of life! In the early days MPW relied on on-the-job training for those working in the field. Later, an in-house training program was adopted consisting of one person, which may not sound like much today, but for its time it was revolutionary in the industry!

Today, MPW’s Safety and Training Department has a full-time staff of 14 people devoted to serving the safety and training needs of all MPW associates throughout all business units.

What are the services you use the most (or are looking forward to using) from the Columbus Chamber?

Of course, the Columbus Chamber’s networking opportunities are crucial to any business, not just MPW. Our entire business depends upon our ability to create new professional relationships and partnerships.

How do you stay engaged with trends that you see in your industry?

MPW takes an active leadership role in industrial trade associations, such as the WaterJet Technology Association (WJTA), the American Society of Engineers (ASME), the Central Ohio Manufacture Partnership (COMP), the Ohio Chemistry Technology Council (OCTC) and the Association of Corporate Counsel’s Columbus chapter, among many others. From that standpoint, it isn’t just that MPW is engaged with our industry’s trends, MPW is setting them!

What is your company culture like?

MPW is a “creative learning organization,” which makes it possible for the company to pivot very well into many different new areas of business. Whether it’s paint stripping, pump trailers, water treatment trailers or robotic water blasting, MPW does a lot of different things, and as long as long as the staff continues to learn and listen to the customer we will successfully pivot to whatever technologies are needed.

One of the staples of MPW’s success is promoting from within. In fact, more than 90% of the executive team is promoted from within. Through the managerial ranks, most managers have been promoted upward through the organization. Promoting from within and developing employees’ skills goes hand in hand with growth, learning and solving problems.

What does it take to be a successful employee at your company?

A successful employee adopts and conveys the fundamentals that have driven MPW for the last 50 years—customer service, high standards, work ethic and responsiveness. A successful employee is noticed through appearance, professional attitude, communication skills, hard work and safety. These values have been instilled in MPW employees throughout the company’s history—be confident, good at the job and always better than the competition, but never arrogant. Always be willing to admit mistakes, learn new skills and be eager to adapt to new technologies and procedures.

What makes Columbus such a great place to do business?

Strictly from a logistical standpoint, Columbus, Ohio is accessible to 147.5 million people or 47.76% of the population of the United States within a 10-hour drive. Considering MPW’s reach across North America, this is extremely advantageous. Also, Columbus boasts a very diverse workforce to fulfill the unique skills and talents an industrial service organization demands—from field technicians to administrative and technological experts.

When all that is coupled with a very reasonable cost of living and an obvious surge in the amount of new industry coming to Central Ohio that’s bound to need MPW’s abilities, it’s clear there’s simply no better place to do business than Columbus, Ohio!
