Columbus Chamber to Host Timely Session on Hiring Foreign-Born Talent Amid Federal Policy Shifts

April 10th, 2025

In response to recent federal policy changes affecting the ability of foreign-born individuals to work legally in the United States, the Columbus Chamber of Commerce – in partnership with Jewish Family Services – will host “Expanding Your Workforce: A Guide to Hiring Foreign-Born Talent” on May 13. This session, led by immigration attorney Robert Cohen, Partner at Porter Wright Morris & Arthur LLP, is part of a broader effort to equip employers with the information and tools needed to navigate workforce challenges with confidence and compliance.

This informative session is designed to help employers understand the legal landscape, ensure compliance with federal and state regulations, and responsibly grow their workforce in a time of increased uncertainty. With many industries — including manufacturing, logistics, healthcare, hospitality, and small business — facing persistent labor shortages, the need for clarity on hiring foreign-born talent has never been more critical.

“Employers across the Columbus Region and beyond are impacted by the federal government’s decision to end the renewal of temporary work permits under the CHNV parole process for citizens from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela,” said Derrick R. Clay, President and CEO of the Columbus Chamber. “This abrupt policy shift not only disrupts business operations, but it also jeopardizes the livelihoods of workers and families who have done everything right — and sends a chilling message to employers trying to do the right thing. That’s why sessions like this are so essential.”

The CHNV parole process was established to provide safe, legal pathways for individuals fleeing dangerous conditions, and its termination, outlined in a recent Federal Register notice, has sparked concern across multiple sectors. According to 2024 U.S. Census data, the Columbus Region added over 61,000 net new residents from international migration over the past four years — accounting for more than 70% of total population growth and fueling regional economic development.

The May 13 session with Robert Cohen will equip business leaders with the tools they need to remain compliant and competitive. Whether attendees are new to the process or seeking to enhance their current hiring practices, they will walk away with actionable guidance to retain and expand their workforce.
