Bringing you the best stories from Columbus business owners, cbuzz is presented by the Columbus Chamber in collaboration with the Columbus Dispatch and CD1025. Our host, local comedian Dan Swartwout, talks with entrepreneurs every other week in Columbus’ first business-focused podcast.

Bruce Caldwell has a background in chemical engineering and a long career working for large corporations like Proctor & Gamble and Scott’s Miracle-Gro, which is where he first fell in love with agriculture. But Bruce’s drive to create a bigger individual impact led him into his current status as an entrepreneur and founder of 3Bar Biologics.

“3Bar Biologics was founded with the goal of helping farmers to increase the yield in their crops while reducing their dependence on synthetic fertilizer and pesticide,” Bruce shared with Dan on the latest episode of cbuzz.

This concept of “probiotics for plants” is disrupting the agriculture industry on a national scale and 3Bar Biologics’ recent partnership with The Ohio State University is allowing Bruce and his team to quickly expand beyond Central Ohio.

Bruce is onto his third lab space at Rev1 Ventures since launching 3Bar Biologics’ first product Bio-YIELD in 2014. “The diversity of different people [at Rev1] all working hard to impact the world, it’s just a thrilling place to be,” said Bruce. “If I was trying to do this out of my garage, I don’t think I’d be doing it anymore.”

“When it was just me starting out, the swings between the good stuff going on and the bad stuff going on can be very large and fluctuate very quickly,” Bruce said when asked about the complexities behind starting his own venture. “In a way it’s exhilarating, it’s a lot of fun, but it can also be kind of scary.”

To close out his conversation with Dan, Bruce answered our infamous ‘why Columbus?’ question: “Columbus is a pretty easy city to navigate. You can get a meeting with anyone. It is one of the advantages we have here.”

Speaking to Columbus’ smart and open business environment, we couldn’t agree more with Bruce’s answer.
