Member Spotlight by Stephen J. Behnke, MD, MBA, MedOne
Provide us with a brief summary of your business’ services.
MedOne is a team of physicians and advanced practice providers that delivers comprehensive, high-value care for patients in and around their hospitalizations. In 2000, we were founded by visionary leaders who saw how hospital-based medicine could positively impact clinical quality, efficiency and patient satisfaction. Hospital medicine is a relatively new profession in the medical field. Hospitalists are physicians, typically board-certified in internal medicine, who care for patients only while they are in the hospital. The discipline of hospital medicine began in the late 1990s when hospitalized patients started to have more complex conditions and their care became more difficult to manage. Hospitals discovered that these patients did better when their care was managed by a physician dedicated to the hospital space. Because we focus our care on this type of patient, we gain unique knowledge and insights that allow us to care for very ill people with the highest-quality care, using evidence-based methods in a very efficient manner, while focused on communication with patients and their families. Our first hospital partner was OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital and we continue to provide hospitalist services on several units, including dedicated, specialized units we’ve helped create to better serve patients. If you’ve ever been a patient at Riverside, chances are that one of our physicians oversaw your care. We now partner with several hospitals across the state including community hospitals and critical access hospitals that have diverse clinical environments. Our practice has also expanded to include care immediately before and after hospitalizations, which helps ensure seamless handoffs and better transitions. We provide pre-admission testing at Riverside to ensure patients are clinically ready for a successful, planned hospital stay. One of the most exciting parts of our practice is in post-acute care, which means care for patients when they transition to another facility after they leave the hospital. We provide and oversee care in the full continuum of the post-acute care environment: a long-term acute-care hospital, inpatient rehabilitation hospital, skilled nursing facilities, long-term care facilities, and independent and assisted living facilities.
Tell us about your company’s mission and values.

What are the services you use the most (or are looking forward to using) from the Columbus Chamber?
We are new members to the Chamber this year. We’re looking forward to getting to know other businesses that are best in class, who set the standard in their industry like we do in ours. We are eager to learn how successful businesses stay on top of their game, recruit the best and stay on a healthy growth trajectory.
How do you stay engaged with trends that you see in your industry?
Healthcare is a rapidly changing industry, which is what makes it so fun to work in. Our team is very involved at the regional and national levels in the Society of Hospital Medicine and we closely monitor trends and innovations from health systems across the country. Because of our expertise in hospital medicine, we’re routinely asked to consult with hospitals to provide counsel about the structure of their hospital medicine programs. Dissecting and helping to solve complex problems keeps us at the forefront of the industry.
What is your company culture like?
I’m most proud of our culture because we are business that never sleeps. Our field demands coverage 365 days a year, 24 hours a day – someone on our team is working holidays, weekends, nights. With that type of schedule, plus the enormity of our work, it’s rare to find a provider in other organizations that doesn’t feel stressed and burned out most of the time. We’re proud that our providers feel the opposite: they feel supported and respected and they’re motivated to go the extra mile to care for our patients. They share a sense of accountability to each other. We are a tight-knit team that puts the needs of patients first and foremost in everything we do. Our systems and our structure are designed to meet the needs of our provides so that, in turn, they can best serve our patients, referring physicians and facility partners. Since our group was founded, and is now led, by hospital-medicine physicians, we know what it takes to support our providers so they can deliver care with the utmost excellence. We have invented our own scheduling system with shorter shifts and family-friendly hours to ensure our providers are fresh and well-rested. Our compensation system is built to reward our providers for their hard work, while incenting them to work the tougher shifts and support the team so all providers have a healthy work/life balance. Our ecosystem is complex, and it works. This year we were named a Best Place to Work by Columbus Business First. The process leading to that recognition validates our approach.
What does it take to be a successful employee at your company?
I can boil it down to three things:
- Clinical excellence
- A passion to put patients first
- A commitment to put team before self
Now, as we are experiencing rapid growth, we’re challenged to ensure we preserve our culture and the ethos that makes our practice special and successful. Even with a full-court press on recruiting, we’re taking the time to identify and hire the right individuals to ensure they share our values. We’re looking for those elite providers with a service heart.
What makes Columbus such a great place to do business?
Columbus is an amazing city and the city’s success is symbiotic with our success. As the population grows across central Ohio, it fuels our growth as healthcare providers. Columbus is blessed with one of the best healthcare ecosystems in the entire nation and we are proud to be a part of that. But what we love most about Columbus is the spirit of collaboration and innovation that we believe is the energy behind the growth. Our business is borne of collaboration between individual providers as well as between our group and the leadership of multiple healthcare facilities and hospital systems. We push each other to innovate and raise the bar on clinical quality. And, we have a great soccer team that was saved by unprecedented collaboration between the city, fans and the new owners. #savethecrew
