John Glenn International Runway 5K Run & Walk

September 17 @ 9:00 am 12:00 pm

The Columbus Regional Airport Authority (CRAA) is pleased to announce the return of the John Glenn International Runway 5K Run & Walk on Saturday, September 17. Registration is now open for this popular community event giving participants rare access to the airport runway while raising funds for an important cause.

The 2nd annual running of the John Glenn International Runway 5K Run & Walk held Saturday, September 22, 2018 on the tarmac of the John Glenn International Airport in Columbus, Ohio. Few people ever get the opportunity to step foot on a runway, let alone race on one. This fun, unique experience allowed racers access to runway CMH 10L-28R. The south runway remained open during the race so planes could be seen taking off, landing and/or taxiing. To honor John Glenn who was an aviator and veteran, all proceeds where donated to Honor Flight Columbus, a nonprofit organization that provides senior veterans with a day in the nation’s capital to visit the memorials built in their honor. Proceeds from the Runway 5K benefit Honor Flight Columbus, a nonprofit organization that provides senior veterans with a day in the nation’s capital to visit the memorials built in their honor. The previous three races held in 2017, 2018 and 2019 raised over $170,000. After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, CRAA aims to once again fund a full flight of veterans this year.

“We are thrilled to welcome the community back to the CMH runway for this exciting event,” said Joseph R. Nardone, CRAA President & CEO. “Not only is it a chance for participants to get a unique, behind-the-scenes perspective of our region’s primary passenger airport, it’s a way to honor and give back to those who bravely served our country.”

“We are so happy that this event is back. For years it has served as a key source of support for Honor Flight Columbus as we honor, share and celebrate the selfless sacrifice and service of these remarkable defenders of our nation,” said Bob Horner, Honor Flight Columbus Executive Director. “With each stride, the runners can take pride in helping our veterans enjoy what they most often describe as one of the best days of their lives.”

The race takes place along runway 28R/10L on the north side of the airport. The race includes a chance to win airline tickets, a swag bag and integration with the RaceJoy mobile app. The race is limited to 1,500 participants and spaces are expected to fill quickly.
