Nonprofit, online university to award up to 50 scholarships across the state
COLUMBUS, Ohio – In honor of the seven U.S. presidents born in Ohio – and the eighth who spent his adult life in the state – WGU Ohio is offering $100,000 in scholarships for up to 50 Ohio students. Each WGU Ohio Presidents Day Scholarshipis valued up to $2,000 – covering around 30 percent of WGU Ohio’s already-low annual tuition.
“As Ohioans, we’re proud to honor those from our state who went on to hold America’s highest office,” said Dr. Rebecca Watts, WGU Ohio chancellor. “We’re also excited to give back to our fellow residents who want to advance their education. WGU Ohio is a great fit for adult learners. Although our degree programs are rigorous, competency-based learning makes it possible for students to accelerate their programs while saving time and money.”
The WGU Ohio Presidents Day Scholarship is open to new students who have been officially admitted to WGU, enroll by June 1, 2019 and are a resident of Ohio. While multiple scholarships will be awarded, this is a competitive program, and scholarships will be awarded based on a candidate’s academic record, readiness for online study, current competency and other considerations.The deadline to apply is midnight, April 15, 2019.
Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, James A. Garfield, Benjamin Harrison, William McKinley, Warren G. Harding and William Howard Taft were born in Ohio. William Henry Harrison moved to the state as an adult – counting him, Ohio is tied for first place with Virginia in the number of presidents to come from a state.
WGU Ohio, created in June 2018 following a partnership between the state of Ohio and nationally recognized Western Governors University, is an online, competency-based university established to expand access to higher education for Ohio residents.
