Free, weekly program developed by the Kauffman Foundation helps build startup communities nationwide
(Columbus, OH) Columbus soon will be the newest home of a national program to engage, educate and connect local entrepreneurs. Founded by the Kauffman Foundation, 1 Million Cups is based on the notion that entrepreneurs network and discover solutions over a million cups of coffee. The free, weekly gathering helps build startup communities on a grassroots level.
Beginning July 11th, 2018, entrepreneurs, innovators, funders and other interested community members are invited to attend each Wednesday from 9 to 10 a.m. at Rev1 Ventures, located at 1275 Kinnear Rd, Columbus, OH 43212.
The program’s model is consistent in each city — every Wednesday morning, early-stage startups present their companies to an audience of mentors, advisers and other entrepreneurs. Each founder presents for six minutes, followed by a 20-minute question-and-answer session with the audience.
The inaugural 1 Million Cups in Columbus will feature a presentation by Alex Frommeyer, CEO and Founder of Beam Dental. Beam is a dental and ancillary benefits company that offers employers a fundamentally unique approach to coverage by incorporating dental hygiene behavior into policy pricing. The company recently closed a $23 million Series C round of funding from Kleiner Perkins to bring Beam’s total raise to date around $35 Million, including funding from local venture capital firm, Drive Capital.
In each 1 Million Cups city, local entrepreneurs drive the program as community organizers. Volunteering for the leadership roles in Columbus are:
- Steve Flaherty, Principal of WENO & Owner of Yumii Kettle Corn;
- Chad Snow, CEO of Sesame;
- Taylor Kolon, Owner of Pure Equity Group;
- Ray Hughes, Principal of WENO & Owner of TradesPro;
- Heather Harmon, Director of Marketing at Rev1 Ventures;
“We are very excited to bring this national organization’s platform to Columbus!” Flaherty said. “Our goal is to become the hub for all things entrepreneurship in the city by connecting organizations and individuals involved with startup ventures or entrepreneurial thinking. Our purpose is the enrichment of the minds involved and to keep Columbus’s entrepreneurial spirt supported and abundant.”
