COLUMBUS, Ohio (January 17, 2018) – City Year Columbus, a nonprofit organization that partners with Columbus City Schools to help keep students in school and on track to graduate, will welcome educator, author, and City Year alumna, Kyle Schwartz, as the keynote speaker at the 2018 Red Jacket Ball, Saturday, April 14 at the Hilton Downtown Columbus Hotel.
Schwartz is a third-grade teacher in Denver Public Schools and the author of the book, “I Wish My Teacher Knew: How One Question Can Change Everything for Our Kids.” What started out as a simple classroom assignment from Schwartz to get to know her students, the #IWishMyTeacherKnew has grown into a worldwide movement.
It started five years ago when Schwartz asked her students to finish the sentence: “I wish my teacher knew __”. She said the answers her students responded with “astounded her—some hilarious, others heartbreaking.” When Schwartz shared her experience online, teachers worldwide were inspired to create safe and supportive environments for their students and began sharing their own stories to #IWishMyTeacherKnew.
City Year Columbus’ Red Jacket Ball will also honor Deloitte with the 2018 City Year Ripple Award for the company’s commitment to work to help keep students in school and on track to graduate. The City Year Ripple Award, inspired by Robert F. Kennedy’s 1966 address to the University of Cape Town, is awarded to organizations that have shown extraordinary commitment to social change.
Deloitte embodies the sentiment expressed by Kennedy and has been a City Year National Leadership Sponsor since 2009, contributing over $3.6 million to the organization’s work and mission. Deloitte has been a consistent champion for City Year through volunteer projects, local board leadership engagement, pro-bono consulting initiatives and the Deloitte AmeriCorps Mentorship Program. Because of this partnership, City Year is more equipped to fulfill its mission of helping to keep students in school and providing them with the resources they need to be successful in college and career.
City Year Columbus’ annual Red Jacket Ball pays tribute to the hard work of our City Year AmeriCorps members and their efforts to serve the students of Columbus City Schools with passion, energy and idealism. The event unites business and community leaders, citizen supporters, and service champions for an evening of celebration to support and honor our AmeriCorps members’ service.
Tickets are $100 for individuals or $150 per couple and can be purchased here. More information about City Year Columbus and Red Jacket Ball is available at www.cityyear.org/columbus. Contact: Kelsie Fields 614-586-4536, firstname.lastname@example.org
