Tell us about your company’s mission and values.
Watershed was created to inspire and celebrate the spirit of change as a force for good by being true to who we are and producing the most sought-after, exceptionally crafted spirits. Watershed’s growth will allow our families, colleagues, customers and communities to realize their full potential.
What are the services you use the most (or are looking forward to using) from the Columbus Chamber?
We rely heavily on our Member Resource Specialist as a resource and sounding board. She (Haley) has been hugely helpful to us over the course of the two years. We also really appreciate the research hours our membership gives us as we’ve used those for multiple purposes in the past.
How do you stay engaged with trends that you see in your industry?
Stating engaged with current trends in our industry is very important! We do this buy subscribing to industry publications, staying up to date with current industry news, listening to what our community and our customers are saying about our products and others like ours and being open to new ideas.
What do you think differentiates you from your competitors?
We take a very thoughtful approach to every action we take here at Watershed. From a product launch to who we are buying our corn from … each decision is made because it helps us fulfill our purpose as a company.
What is your company culture like?
We’ve worked really hard to create a culture that is open and supportive. We interact with each other like family. We expect a lot from our employees but we’ve created a culture of appreciation and respect. We work hard, but we also know how to have a good time and cut lose when it’s appropriate.
What advice would you have appreciated hearing when first starting your career?
Everyone always says, “Don’t be afraid to fail” but truly the better advice is – “Be afraid to fail.” If you aren’t afraid then you aren’t human. But don’t let fear paralyze you and keep you from action. Let it inform your decisions so that you make better, more sound decisions.
How do you achieve work/life balance?
We try really hard to ensure when our employees are off the clock, they are truly off the clock. Being a start up, we all work long hours and it’s important to disconnect when we leave for the day/week. We encourage people to use their PTO and have also implemented a Personal Change Leave policy to make sure every three years our employees get a little extra time to take care of themselves.
Where is your favorite place to have a meeting outside of the office?
We love visiting all the local coffee shops and roasters for business meetings we don’t have at the distillery, but given our industry, it’s not unusual for businesses to happen at any of the amazing local restaurants and bars!
Why do you think Columbus is a great place to do business?
Columbus is growing and such an appealing place to live for so many different demographics. It gives us a diverse market to do business in. Columbus and the people of Columbus are also incredibly supportive of their own. We all want to see Columbus and the people helping make Columbus relevant succeed.
