Tell us about your company’s mission and values.
Hawkes Crystal is a legacy trademark from the late 1800’s. Our mission is to design contemporary cut crystal to add sparkle to a modern lifestyle. Our Corporate and Commemoratives design division aims to create a custom niche alternative to an otherwise very commercial market
What are the services you use the most (or are looking forward to using) from the Columbus Chamber?
I really try to utilize any and all of the networking functions that the Columbus Chamber offers. Being new to the area, I believe it is extremely important to meet and get to know as many people as I can and these networking events make that possible.
How do you stay engaged with trends that you see in your industry?
In our industry, specifically, we take so much pride in our “roots”. The general cut crystal marketplace however, seems to lean more towards the “traditional” side when it comes to design and patterns. At Hawkes Crystal, we not only want to honor the traditional side of design, but want to spotlight contemporary pieces as much as possible. We are developing an apprenticeship program to ensure the artistry continues through the next generation.
What is your company culture like?
Our number one goal is to make sure we meet and exceed the customer/ client’s expectations of us. Some of our best design ideas have come from our customers and from collectors of vintage Hawkes crystal pieces. We learn something new everyday from them and each other at the workshop.
What does it take to be a successful employee at your company?
To be a successful employee at Hawkes Crystal you really must go the extra mile. We are a small, locally owned, startup company with four employees, which means you have to be willing to go above and beyond what is expected of you when it comes to getting the job done. Communication is also very important to our success, orders are always changing and it is extremely important for everyone to be on the same page.
What makes Columbus such a great place to do business?
Hands down, the people. I specifically was hesitant moving to Columbus from a small town culture where everyone knows everyone. My anxiety about starting over in Columbus was quickly calmed. Everyone has been so friendly and insightful. One my favorite parts about my job is how easily I have been able to spin a web of connections personally and in business in my new hometown.
What pieces of advice have you found to be the most helpful since starting your career?
Network. Network. Network!
I have been able to meet so many people through networking who have all really gone the extra mile to help our business succeed here in Columbus.
How do you achieve a work/life balance?
Thankfully, a lot of what I do for work happens to be what I enjoy doing in my free time. Being in sales in Columbus, I am constantly meeting new people, which is energizing.
Where is your favorite place to have a meeting outside the office?
Being relatively new to the area, I have loved getting to know the many local coffee shops. They are all so unique and inviting and they have always set the tone for great meetings. The coffee part isn’t so bad either. Sip local, shop local.
