What are the services you use the most (or are looking forward to using) from the Columbus Chamber?
One of the most valuable aspects of our membership is our Member Resource Specialist. I believe that the relationship between the Columbus Chamber and the company needs to be symbiotic, especially with the company doing some of the legwork. But from my experience with my MRS, Haley Sherman has been instrumental in not only encouraging us to utilize the chamber and what it has to offer but she has served as somewhat of a mentor and encourager as we grow our business. She is always there spark new ideas and has been a strategic influence in some of the ways that we seek new business opportunities.
How do you stay engaged with trends that you see in your industry?
Staying up to date in an industry that’s constantly shifting isn’t easy, but being aware of changes as they’re happening keeps us ahead of the curve. One thing we do is subscribe to all the relevant trade journals and attend many of the consumer product shows so that we can stay up to date on new equipment. We continue to invest in new equipment every year so we have the best solutions for our large range of customers.

What is your company culture like?
A great company culture comes down to one thing: the people. Hughie’s empowers everyone to contribute on every level of the planning phase for clients and their events. We openly share the successes of the organization, its teams, and its individuals with everyone. It’s a major motivation boost for the team to hear the positive results of their hard work. We have a recognition program in place and highlight an employee each month. Annually, we have company outings that include family that allows everyone to socialize outside of the workplace, team building opportunities and incentive programs. We pride ourselves by offering a stable work environment, loyal leadership and a staff that is in place to service our past, current and future clients with all of their production needs.
How do you achieve work/life balance?
With how accessible we can be with current technology, I try to put my mind on Airplane Mode. It’s not always easy with what I have on my plate at Hughie’s, at the church where I lead the children’s ministry or at home with my beautiful family. At the end of the day, my priorities are my Faith, my family and then my work. For me, that’s the ideal balance!
What business leader do you admire the most and why?
I used to work for Willow Brook Christian Communities, a retirement community that is based out of Delaware, Ohio. The CEO, Larry Harris, had an incredible vision of leadership that will stick with me for a long time. Many companies have a typical, pyramid scheme for the structure of their company, with the CEO at the top and the remaining staff below. His leadership style was based off of an “inverted” pyramid scheme, with him as the CEO at the bottom, serving and supporting the executive directors above him; the executive directors serving and supporting their leaders, etc. I truly admire the servant-leadership style of management.
Why do you think Columbus is a great place to do business?
Columbus is a melting pot of incredible businesses that serves an incredible community. I’m grateful to have the opportunity to belong to an organization that is a piece of the big picture of what’s going on around Columbus. I can’t imagine what we will look like as this city grows!
